Holidays in Lefkada
Lefkada is one of the beautiful island of the Ionian Sea that is situated on the Westside of Central Greece, near the region of Etoloakarnania. Nowadays the island is connected with the mainland through a long causeway and a floating bridge.
As an island with magnificent sceneries and inspirational natural beauty, it is one of the most popular holiday destinations with visitors from all over the world. It is the homeland of two very famous literary men – Aristotelis Valaoritis and Angelos Sikelianos, who was the first twentieth-century Greek poet to be a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
In August the island is full of visitors, mainly art and literature lovers, who arrive here to attend to the “Art and Literature” festival, which is an international cultural event that has been organized every year in Lefkada since 1960.
The capital town is Chora (Hora) with its dominating castle of Agia Mavra, which stands at the beginning of the bridge that connects the island with the mainland. Chora is a very picturesque and beautiful town that has preserved it’s traditional character and elements of the past.
In Chora are many narrow alleys that are ideal for exploring and which lead to beautiful corners and spots in the town. The town alsohas plenty of newly built buildings that were built recently, adding a modern touch to the already beautiful town.
Walking through the alleys you will find the Museum of Lefkada, where you will have the chance to admire impressive collections of art and other interesting findings.
You can visit the church of Agios Minas, which is situated in one of the most picturesque squares and is the continuation of the shopping center of the town. You can relax and take a break in one of the cafes or traditional taverns and ouzo places, enjoying the lovely atmosphere and the local tastes.
At a distance of 3km is the monastery of Faneromeni, which is built in a magnificent spot. The area is a very important religious center and popular place where the locals come to relax.
Starting from Chora, visitors can explore the island continuing southwards to Nydri, the famous resort and from there to the traditional village of Karya, which is one of the most beautiful in Lefkada.
Karya is situated in a very beautiful place were the traditional architecture is in complete harmony with the natural environment. This village is famous for the local handmade embroidery – the well known “Karsanika” embroidery from Lefkada.
Continuing the exploring you will arrive at two of the most beautiful beaches of Lefkada, Kathisma (Agios Nikitas) and Porto Katsiki, which are magnificent and breathetaking. During the summer these two beaches are very popular with visitors who came here, to enjoy the clean and beautiful sea and scenery.

Lefkada is catered by the airport of Aktion and with the KTEL coach network from Athens. It has access with boat connections to the nearby islands of Kefalonia and Ithaki.
